Reducing the number of cues in a given time frame might actually simplify Cued Speech.

Do cues for consonant clusters negate the phonemic basis of CS?

Phonemes are already combined in ch j ur y w wh. The genius of Cued Speech is that it mirrors spoken language systematically and phonemically.

Will more than 8 handshapes place a heavy burden on memory?

Why? People handle many signs as well as manual alphabet. Seven of the proposed handshapes are used in Polish Cued Speech.

What about fluent cuers? Can they change automatic moves?

Perhaps not. The new handshapes are optional, and the time frame for this experiment may be decades or more.

Will advances in electronic cueing and cochlear implants make manual cueing obsolete?

The extinction of manual cueing would, in the opinion of this writer, destroy the vitality of a system which, face-to-face, without electricity, literacy or sound, conveys spoken language with the movement of one hand.

Do standardization and certification make experimental cueing counterproductive?

The work of Dr.Jean Krause and her collaborators may be securing the future of manual cueing. It has inspired this writer. Linguistic change is, however, a fact of human experience.

Does NCSA support experimentation with new handshapes?

I hope that NCSA will not evaluate this research proposal while it remains experimental. It will be fortunate if objective experimentation precedes official criticism.

How would experimentation begin?

Keep in mind that new handshapes and placements need to be studied in the context of natural utterances, then try experimenting with new handshapes for st, ts, shuhn, or whatever interests you.
